In 17th Worcester District, LeBoeuf claims seat back for Democrats

WORCESTER - In the election for an open House seat in the 17th Worcester District, which includes Leicester and the Webster Square and Main South sections of Worcester, David LeBoeuf, a Democratic operative from Worcester, declared victory over Paul Fullen, a Republican and Worcester firefighter.

About 9 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. LeBoeuf told supporters at Zorba’s restaurant that he was headed to victory with 58 percent of the vote.

He will succeed state Rep. Kate Campanale, R-Leicester, who ran for county register of deeds. The late John Binienda, a Worcester Democrat, previously represented the district for 28 years.

The contest pitted a liberal Democratic operative who has worked for former Senate President Harriette Chandler and former City Manager Michael O’Brien against a conservative Republican firefighter who campaigned as a political outsider. Both candidates were making their first bid for elective office.
